1887 Three Dollar, PR64 Deep Cameo
Profound Surface Contrast

1887 $3 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. In the third calendar year before the unusual three dollar gold series terminated for good in 1889, the Philadelphia Mint struck 160 proofs to complement the 6,000 business strikes for the year 1887. That amount would turn out to be the largest for the business strikes through the series' end, although the 1888 proof total, at 291 pieces, would be nearly twice as large as that of 1887. In 1889 both formats would be down, 129 proofs and 2,300 circulation strikes, but both were likely saved in greater quantity due to their last-year status. Profound field-device contrast dominates both sides of this orange-gold near-Gem proof 1887, with reflective fields that fade to black against the frosted devices. It takes a loupe to see the few minuscule contact marks in the fields that determine the grade, but they are far from overt and detract little from the obvious eye appeal. Population: 4 in 64 Deep Cameo, 5 finer (2/13).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 28AW, PCGS# 98051)
