Alluring PR65 1887 Three Dollar Gold1887 $3 PR65 PCGS. Many examples were saved of this proof emission from near the end of the series, so that numerous certified examples exist today, including some proofs that are double- or triple-struck, the dies being rotated between strikes. This piece shows no such reverse doubling. However, the reverse die is slightly rotated, perhaps 10 degrees counterclockwise from normal coin turn. This piece shows pronounced cameo contrast, with pristine, reflective fields and thickly frosted devices. Under a loupe, a small patch of contact marks appears in the left obverse field, and a small group of marks appears on the reverse near the left rim. Those marks, however, fail to diminish this piece's significant allure. Certified in a green-label holder. PCGS has certified only 12 pieces in Gem grade including this piece, with seven coins finer (4/07).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 28AW, PCGS# 8051)
