Description:

1888 Three Dollar, PR64
Richly Patinated, Brightly Reflective
1888 $3 PR64 PCGS. The proof 1888 is scarcer than generally understood. The Guide Book reports a proof mintage of 291 pieces, but PCGS and NGC combined have certified just 207 pieces in all grades (1/13). Much of that quantity undoubtedly represents resubmissions over the past 26 years, particularly from PCGS to NGC in attempts to secure Cameo designations. The present piece does have noticeable contrast, particularly on the obverse, but it remains housed in the green label holder where it has resided since the 1990s. It has Breen's diagnostic, a patch of die rust on the neck seen on all 1888 proofs. Attractively toned orange-gold with the deepest shades near the rims. Gorgeously smooth despite a shallow planchet lamination (as made) near the D in UNITED. Population: 26 in 64, 40 finer (1/13).
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 4027.
