Description:
1888 Three Dollar, PR65 Cameo
Outstanding Eye Appeal
1888 $3 PR65 Cameo PCGS. CAC. The 1888 three dollar supposedly has the highest proof mintage of any three dollar gold piece (according to Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, 2008). David Bowers (2005), on the other hand, contends: "Possibly 291 were struck, but not all were sold." In any event, Bowers estimates 200 proofs were produced. Of these, he gives an estimate of 120 to 150 extant pieces.
The present PR65 Cameo specimen displays beautiful orange-gold color throughout both sides and pronounced field-motif contrast. The design elements are exquisitely struck. This piece has been exceptionally well cared for as there are no mentionable post-strike marks. The foregoing attributes add up to outstanding eye appeal. Population: 5 in 65 Cameo, 3 finer (12/12).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 28AX, PCGS# 88052)
