Description

1873 Closed 3 Two Cent, PR66 Red and Brown
Significant Red Remains

1873 2C Closed 3 PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. The Closed 3 coins were the original proof strikings, as all of the Open 3 two cent pieces were later restrikes. One wonders what Mint officials of the 19th century would think if they knew the depth of numismatic research today, which distinguishes between the two types. This piece shows much more red than brown, the latter primarily occupying the device high points, and the strike and overall appeal are impeccable. Only a single PCGS-certified piece is numerically finer, a PR67 Red coin. Population: 19 in 66 Red and Brown, 0 finer (4/13).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 2753, PCGS# 3652)

HA is a traditional auction house, they set up their auctions slightly different from typical domain auctions. This works well, it seems to be a good mix of old age (live bidding in a prestigious hotel) and new age (online bidding).
