Finest Known 1936 Proof Half Dollar

1936 50C PR68 PCGS. Because this was the first year of production for Half Dollar proofs since 1915, a large number of coins fell into the hands of new collectors and non-collectors who did not know how to properly care for proofs. As a result, many were cleaned or otherwise impaired, and today very few are extant with unaltered and original surfaces. This is such a coin, and as such is a singular opportunity for the knowledgeable collector. To date (1/05), this is the single finest certified 1936 proof Half Dollar seen by either service. This one is obviously a product of a first strike from new dies, and was subsequently carefully preserved by a dedicated collector. Every last design element rises noticeably above smooth surfaces with pinpoint striking definition. Distracting abrasions? There are none! The originally preserved surfaces do reveal beautiful gold and crimson patina that is most extensive in a few areas around the peripheries and over the reverse. A jewel in the crown for the serious collector of Walking Liberty Halves.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
