Description:
Richly Toned Condition Rarity 1837
Reeded Edge Half Dollar, MS65
1837 50C MS65 NGC. The 1837 is one of only two issues of Christian Gobrecht's Reeded Edge, 50 CENTS Reverse half dollar. The scarcity of the low-mintage (1,200 pieces) 1836 steers most type collectors in the direction of the 1837. The latter issue is also a condition rarity in its own right, and few survivors possess the relatively abrasion-free surfaces of this richly toned representative. Warm copper-gray toning covers the centers, with cobalt-blue peripheral patination. Blushes of crimson color are intermingled throughout the obverse. The strike is sharp in all areas, although a few small abrasions cluster over and before Liberty's neck. Census: 40 in 65, 12 finer (4/09).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 24G4, PCGS# 6176)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
