Description:

1839-O Reeded Edge Half Dollar, MS65
Condition Census GR-1 Example
1839-O 50C MS65 NGC. GR-1, R.1. The 1839-O Reeded Edge half dollar claims a mintage of 116,000 pieces with five die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the GR-1 variety with a recut mintmark that connects to the primary mintmark on the lower left side and short stubby talons on the eagle's claws. The GR-1 is the most available variety of the date accounting for about 95% of examples seen. The present coin is from a late state of the dies and shows an extensive network of die cracks on both the obverse and reverse. This is the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was previously used to strike the famous 1838-O half dollars.

The coin offered here is a spectacular Gem with vibrant mint luster and well-preserved surfaces that show no mentionable signs of contact. The design elements are sharply detailed in most areas, with a touch of softness on the eagle's right (facing) claw and a few star centers. Eye appeal is outstanding. This coin should fit comfortably in the Condition Census for the variety. Census (for all varieties): 7 in 65, 3 finer (10/13).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 24G7, PCGS# 6181)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
