Description

Important Condition Rarity, 1909 Saint-Gaudens $20, MS65 PCGS

1909 $20 MS65 PCGS. The 1909-P is a highly respected condition rarity in the Saint-Gaudens series, rated as an R.8 by Akers in MS65 (1990). The surfaces on this coin are refreshingly free from abrasions, and each side has a warm, satiny glow and light golden-orange color. This low mintage (161,282 pieces) issue is typically well struck, and the luster is "nearly always good", also according to Mr. Akers. Of the limited number of Mint State survivors available to today's collectors, however, all but a few coins are heavily bagmarked. In stark contrast, the present piece displays exquisitely preserved, nearly blemish-free surfaces. The strike is certainly bold, if not full, and should not be found objectionable by even the most discriminating bidder. All in all, this is a remarkable Gem, and rare as such, for the date. Population: 9 in 65, 4 finer (12/03).

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
