Description:
1909-D Double Eagle, MS64
Sharply Detailed and Lustrous
1909-D $20 MS64 PCGS. In its second year of production for the Saint-Gaudens double eagle, the Denver mint delivered only 52,500 coins. This date was once regarded as a major rarity in Mint State, but the emergence of a Central American hoard in 1983 has made the 1909-D generally available in grades up to and including the MS63 level. In Choice and finer grades, however, this issue remains highly elusive. This sharply struck example offers soft, frosty luster that enlivens cyan-tinged wheat-gold surfaces. Only a few light, scattered ticks preclude Gem status. PCGS has graded 23 numerically finer examples (6/14).

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
