Description

Elusive Gem 1914 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle

1914 $20 MS65 PCGS. The 1914 Philadelphia issue of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle had a low original mintage of just 95,320 pieces. Lovely lime-green and peach toning adorns the satiny, matte-like surfaces of this visually enticing Gem. Soft, frosted mint luster illuminates the crisply struck design features and well preserved fields. This is an elusive date in grades higher than MS64, with only 28 examples graded MS65 or better by PCGS, and considerably fewer than that by NGC. Housed in a green label PCGS holder. PCGS Population: 25 in 65, 3 finer (11/05).

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
