Description:
Select 1920-S Saint-Gaudens Twenty
Rare Key Issue in High Grade
1920-S $20 MS63 PCGS. In Mint State grades, the 1920-S double eagle is more difficult to locate than the prized 1927-D, 1929, 1930-S, 1931-D and 1932 issues and ranks as one of the premier rarities in the Saint-Gaudens series. In an average year, the elusive, heavily melted 1920-S makes a handful of auction appearances most often in lightly circulated condition, those few pieces having entered commerce for a few years and subsequently having survived the gold recall of the 1930s. While not the extraordinary rarity in Uncirculated condition that it was a generation ago, when Walter Breen estimated only 8-12 examples were extant, this issue still compares favorably with most of the elites of the Saint-Gaudens series in Mint State. Even after the release of a small number of coins from European banks during this time frame, Select pieces are quite rare and there are fewer than 20 examples known in finer grades.
This impressive Select specimen has the soft, frosted luster expected of Uncirculated survivors and displays blushes of reddish patina over both sides in addition to a hint of pastel-gold at the margins. Surface marks are generally modest, with several abrasions that are confined mostly to the right obverse field. A short contact mark on the ray below the olive branch could serve as a pedigree marker. Overall eye appeal is outstanding. An important offering for the quality-conscious 20th century gold specialist. Population: 11 in 63, 17 finer (11/11).
Ex: Long Beach Signature Auction (Heritage, 2/2000), lot 6900, realized $33,350; FUN Signature Auction (Heritage, 1/2005), lot 30564, realized $55,200.(Registry values: N10218) (NGC ID# 26FZ, PCGS# 9171)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
