Description

Rare Near-Mint 1921 Double Eagle

1921 $20 AU58 PCGS. In terms of total pieces known, the 1921 is the fourth rarest issue in the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series after only the 1907 Extremely High Relief, 1927-D, and 1933. Although there are more 1921 Double Eagles in collectors' hands, the issue is more difficult to locate in Mint State than even the 1930-S and 1931-D. Obviously, most of the 528,500 pieces produced at the Philadelphia Mint this year were melted. An offering of considerable importance to 20th century gold specialists, this coin is the lightest rub away from an Uncirculated grade. There are a few wispy abrasions on the obverse and reverse, but we stress that the surfaces are remarkably clean for a circulated gold coin of this size. Both sides display original copper-golden patina and partial cartwheel luster.

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
