Description:
PCGS 1921 MS 60. The 1921 is one of the six rarest dates in the Saint-Gaudens series of double eagles, and it is rarer than two of those issues (the 1931-D and 1930-S) in full mint state. Perhaps as many as 40-50 pieces exist in all grades with no more than 8-10 coins still extant in mint condition. One dubious tribute to the rarity of this issue is that forgeries have been made of this date in Europe. This is a solid mint state coin. The surfaces exude a warm frosted mint luster that is most appealing, and a rich orange and yellow-gold color is intermixed over the surfaces. The striking quality is excellent with only slight softness noted on the highest portions of the design. As an MS 60, this is quite an appealing specimen that is limited in grade only by the presence of a few small to moderate sized abrasions on each side. Population: 1 in 60, only 4 finer (8/94). (NGC ID# 26G2, PCGS# 9172)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
