Description

1921 Saint-Gaudens Twenty--Second Finest Certified, an MS 64 Specimen

1921 MS 64 NGC. The 1921 is one of the six rarest dates in the Saint-Gaudens series of double eagles, and it is rarer than two of those issues (the 1931-D and 1930-S) in full mint state. Perhaps as many as 40-50 pieces exist in all grades with no more than 8-10 coins still extant in mint condition. One dubious tribute to the rarity of this issue is that forgeries have been made of this date in Europe. This is a lovely mint state coin whose surfaces exude a soft, satin-like luster with orange-gold color over both sides. The striking quality is excellent with only slight softness noted on the toes of the right (facing) foot of Liberty. The only marks of any note are a diagonal abrasion below the left breast of Liberty and a couple of pinprick abrasions on her left knee. Currently (2/97) this piece is the second finest example certified by either of the major services, and we feel comfortable pronouncing it as the second finest known. A terrific absolute as well as a condition rarity in the Saint-Gaudens series, and a coin that could only be sold out of a major collection such as that donated to the Diocese of Buffalo and in a sale as important as the Summer ANA. (NGC ID# 26G2, PCGS# 9172)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
