Description:
Choice 1924-S Double Eagle
Only Three Numerically Finer at PCGS
1924-S $20 MS64 PCGS Secure. The 1924-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle was considered the rarest coin of the series in the 1940s. B. Max Mehl and Abe Kosoff both claimed to have offered the 1924-S for the first time, Kosoff in his 1947 ANA auction and Mehl in his Dr. Charles W. Green catalog in 1949. Actually, both dealers were wrong, as the 1924-S appeared in lot 369 of Sale 397 (Morgenthau, 4/1939). The issue later surfaced in some European holdings, but it is still a better date today.

This impressive Choice example is well-detailed and lustrous, with yellow and rose-gold surfaces that show only minor signs of contact. The 1924-S is a scarce issue in MS64, and PCGS has graded only three numerically finer examples (3/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26G9, PCGS# 9179)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
