Description

'Sleeper' 1925-S Double Eagle, MS62

1925-S $20 MS62 NGC. As with so many Saint-Gaudens twenties, the large mintage exceeding 3.7 million coins belies the rarity of the 1925-S today. Bowers calls it a "sleeper" and notes that the population is mostly divided between high-grade circulated examples and lower-level Mint State coins. The finest example that we have ever offered is an MS67 PCGS example formerly in the Phillip H. Morse Collection.
The present MS62 NGC example displays consistent reddish-gold color with subdued mint luster. A few marks scattered over each side are consistent with the grade, and we note a curious small green area, perhaps a stain, on the reverse between two rays of the sun, above IN.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26GC, PCGS# 9182)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
