Description:
1926-D Double Eagle, Lustrous MS62
1926-D $20 MS62 NGC. This lower-mintage issue saw just 481,000 pieces struck, most of which were melted in the mid-1930s. NGC has certified a little over 100 pieces, mostly in MS61 to MS63 grades. The Census report indicates a "spike" in MS62, perhaps from resubmissions hoping for an upgrade to MS63. The present offering displays bright luster on its peach-gold surfaces. The design elements are relatively well-struck, including Liberty's facial features, the fingers on the branch hand, and the eagle's plumage. Distributed marks determine the grade. Census: 45 in 62, 28 finer (11/13).

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
