Description

Very Scarce 1926-D Double Eagle, MS63

1926-D $20 MS63 PCGS. Writing in 1990, Akers said, "Like the 1925-S, the 1926-D is one of the rarest and most underrated issues in the entire series." It is very seldom encountered above marginal MS60-61 condition. The numbers from PCGS bear out what Akers said, and further reinforce this issue's rarity in the better grades of Mint State. Only 37 coins have been so graded with 12 finer (10/02). The surfaces are bright and satiny with rich, even reddish patina on each side. Minimally abraded for an MS63, this will make a fine addition to a date and mintmark set of Saints.
From the George Coyman Collection. (NGC ID# 26GE, PCGS# 9184)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
