Description

1926-D Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, AU 55 PCGS

1926-D $20 AU 55 PCGS. Although the word "underrated" seems out of place in an analysis of post-1923 double eagles from the Denver Mint, the true scarcity of the 1926-D seems to be overlooked by all but the most knowledgeable gold specialists. Perhaps this is due to the fame that accrues to the 1927-D. An important coin in its own right, this minimally worn survivor exhibits rich orange-gold patina and a virtual absence of weakly defined features. There are, however, several scattered abrasions, but the shimmering, satiny luster is easily one of this coin's most desirable traits. An important bidding opportunity. (NGC ID# 26GE, PCGS# 9184)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
