Description:
Extremely Scarce Gem 1926-S Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle
1926-S $20 MS65 NGC. Just a fraction of the coins from this issue are believed to be extant, from an original mintage of more than 2 million pieces, and the Mint State population dwindles rapidly above the Choice level. This Gem has a pleasing, nearly full strike, and also displays exceptionally appealing medium golden-orange color. The glowing satiny luster is lovely as well, if not flashy, and helps to accent the exquisitely preserved features. Three small contact marks are visible on the lower half of Liberty's figure, but the reverse only shows a few very trivial blemishes. An attractive and minimally abraded example of this mass-melted issue. Most certified 1926-S Saints fall into the MS62 to MS64 grade range, and specimens grading as high as the present example can be considered very scarce. Population: 10 in 65, 3 finer (12/03).
From a Magnificent Collection of Double Eagles. (#9185) (Registry values: P1, N26000) (NGC ID# 26GF, PCGS# 9185)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
