Description:

1926-S Double Eagle, MS65
Prime Melt Rarity
1926-S $20 MS65 PCGS. As is so often the case with branch mint Saint-Gaudens double eagles of the 1920s, the government's mass melting of gold coins during the subsequent decade put an undeniable crimp in the future supply of the issue. At the Gem level the 1926-S emerges as a condition rarity. This yellow-to-orange example has substantial cartwheel luster that flashes at certain angles to the light. While a touch of softness is noted on Liberty's torch hand, this is an entirely appealing coin, minimally abraded with only a few shallow luster scrapes. Population: 31 in 65, 4 finer (9/13).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26GF, PCGS# 9185)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
