Description:
1927-S Saint-Gaudens Twenty, AU50
Scarce, Heavily-Melted Issue
1927-S $20 AU50 NGC. Despite its large mintage of 3.1 million coins, the 1927-S double eagle became a legendary rarity after virtually the entire production was apparently melted in the 1930s. Fortunately for collectors, a few hundred pieces later emerged, presumably from European bank vaults, beginning in the 1950s.

This AU example, one of only 260 pieces graded by NGC and PCGS, is boldly defined overall, showing weakness only on Liberty's branch hand, the Capitol building, and the eagle's talon. A band of cherry-red toning traverses the obverse periphery, and mingles within Liberty's hair tresses and on her lower legs and feet. Similar cherry-red toning covers much of the reverse, along with accents of navy-blue and purple-red. The centers exhibit pastel green coloration, on each side.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26GJ, PCGS# 9188)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
