Description

Near-Mint 1927-S Double Eagle Rarity

1927-S $20 AU58 PCGS. Only a few hundred examples of this date exist today, despite a mintage in excess of 3 million coins. The exact mintage was 3,107,000 coins, the fifth highest of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series, and the seventh highest mintage of any double eagle issues since the denomination began in 1850. However, mintage figures are often misleading, and this is a perfect example. Essentially the entire mintage was melted over the next dozen years, and only a few hundred coins are still known. Although some examples are lightly circulated, such as this coin, the majority of survivors are fully Mint State. This near-Mint coin is an excellent candidate, combining grade and price into a good value. Both sides are fully lustrous with glorious honey-gold color, and only a trace of rub on the highest design points. The surfaces are pleasing, without any marks of significance, and the rims show the typical beveling of San Francisco Mint double eagles from this decade. Population: 23 in 58, 71 finer (7/06).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 26GJ, PCGS# 9188)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
