Undeniably Rare 1927-S Double Eagle, MS60 PCGS

1927-S $20 MS60 PCGS. While the 1927-D may certainly overshadow the 1927-S among beginning collectors, advanced specialists know that the latter issue is also a rarity deserving of respect. Several decades ago, and prior to the emergence of a few examples in Europe, many numismatic scholars considered the 1927-S to be the fourth rarest Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle after the 1924-S, 1926-D, and 1926-S. Overseas holdings that have since been repatriated resulted in a realignment in the relative rarity of many dates in this series, the '27-S included. The number of examples found in Europe, however, was significantly fewer than those for most other dates. In fact, Akers (1988) states that findings of this issue have never approached roll quantity, let alone that of a hoard. The author goes on to estimate that no more than 60 Mint State examples are extant. While NGC and PCGS report a higher total, their population data may be somewhat swelled by resubmissions.
Housed in an older PCGS holder, this coin is exceptionally smooth for the MS60 designation. Green-gold color warms to golden-rose shadings at direct angles. Typically well struck for the issue, but we do note some trivial softness of detail over a few of the higher points of the design. Pleasing satin-to-frosty luster overlays both sides, and a few wispy reverse distractions over the eagle's breast are noted for accuracy. This is the first Mint State '27-S that we have handled since 2001.
From the Aaron Bliss Collection. (NGC ID# 26GJ, PCGS# 9188)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
