Description:
1927-S Double Eagle, Lustrous MS62
Heavily Melted S-Mint Issue
1927-S $20 MS62 PCGS. CAC. While the 1927-S mintage exceeded 3.1 million pieces, most of it was melted in the 1930s, leaving only a few hundred surviving to the present day. PCGS has certified only about 80 examples in Mint State, mostly MS62 and MS63. Higher-grade specimens are rare. The present MS62 piece displays lustrous, brassy-gold surfaces. Liberty's facial features and branch-hand fingers are sharply defined, as are the eagle's feathers. The usually seen weakness shows on the Capitol building, though some of the panes are evident. A few light marks barely preclude the next highest grade. Population: 29 in 62 (1 in 62+), 41 finer (11/13).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26GJ, PCGS# 9188)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
