Description:
1927-S Double Eagle, MS62+
Appealing Mint Luster
1927-S $20 MS62+ PCGS. The 1927-S was in the 1940s regarded as belonging to the second level of rarity behind the "classics" of the Saint-Gaudens series at that time, the 1924-S, 1926-D, and 1926-S. It was even considered rarer than the 1927-D, which today is the foremost collectible rarity within the series. Although many millions of 1927-S double eagles were minted, few were ever released, despite a small number of circulated examples known. Mostly these coins were held as Treasury reserves, like various other late-series issues. This appealing MS62+ example displays brilliant mint luster over orange-gold surfaces that show a peppering of light marks amid a bold strike. Population: 31 in 62 (1 in 62+), 42 finer (3/13).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26GJ, PCGS# 9188)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
