Description

Noteworthy 1929 Saint-Gaudens Twenty MS65

1929 $20 MS65 NGC. Although not as widely recognized among the generally collecting public as the more publicized Twenties of the 1930s, the elusive 1929 opens the final segment of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series where every issue from this year through 1933 is a major rarity. While the 1929 is the among least rare of this group in terms of overall numbers, it is seldom located at the Gem level and any offering of an MS65 is a noteworthy event among specialists in the series.
As is characteristic of the issue, this coin displays razor sharp definition and its minimally abraded surfaces are layered in tinges of reddish patina. Both sides display a rich endowment of mint frost that cartwheels boldly around the sharply struck features. Population: 4 in 65 (16 at PCGS), 0 finer (11/03).
From a Magnificent Collection of Double Eagles. (#9190) (Registry values: P1, N26750) (NGC ID# 26GL, PCGS# 9190)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
