Remarkable Gem Quality 1929 Saint-Gaudens Twenty
1929 $20 MS65 NGC. The last five collectible issues in the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series are all prized rarities of which few representations survive today. Although the 1929 Saint is the most obtainable of these in terms of overall scarcity, only a small percentage (probably less than 10 percent), qualifies as Gems. According to David Akers in his book A Handbook of 20th Century United States Gold Coins: 1907-1933, there are very few attractive specimens of this issue. The author continues: "I have seen only a few really exceptional quality 1929 Double Eagles... However, I have seen more super examples of the 1931 and 1932 than I have of the 1929, so it may come as a surprise to some that one is probably more likely to be able to find an MS-65 plus or better 1931 or 1932 than a similar quality 1929." The coin offered here displays a warm satiny glow and is draped in soft reddish-orange patina. A few inconspicuous marks are located on the sun's rays and within the folds of Liberty's gown, but these detract very little from the aesthetic appeal of this fully original and uncommonly nice example. Worthy of the finest collection of Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles. Population: 3 in 65, 0 finer (10/02).

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
