Description:
Seductive Gem Mint State 1929 Double Eagle
1929 $20 MS65 PCGS. Here is a very rare coin in this lofty grade, and this is certainly tied with a small group as one of the finest to come down to us. The luster is undisturbed in the fields and the surfaces are very pleasing to study. We note a faint blush of light bluish tones on the uppermost devices, elsewhere the orange-gold frost adheres to the devices. Struck during the year of the great stock market collapse, and very few were saved. Of the known population of this date, most are seen in lower mint state grades, and very few of these show evidence of circulation. As with most other dates from this series, the vast majority met their fate in the melting pots during the 1933-4 period, and virtually the entire mintage was destroyed. Today, a trickle of these have turned up, including a large group found in England in 1984 (Breen says 40 pieces), but the total number known remains fairly small. NGC and PCGS have graded a combined 19 pieces this high, with just two more seen finer for this date. Needless to say, this is an important condition rarity, and a date which is seldom available in any grade.

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
