Description

Prized 1930-S Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle MS63

1930-S $20 MS63 PCGS. The 1930-S is the rarest of the 1929-1932 Double Eagles, with only a few dozen pieces extant after an original production run of a mere 74,000 pieces. In the entire series, only the legendary 1927-D Saint-Gaudens is appreciably more elusive in Mint State grades. Offered here is a nicely preserved example of this prized rarity, with richly frosted surfaces that have surprisingly few abrasions for the assigned grade. Most of the contact marks visible under magnification are well concealed within the folds of Liberty's robe. If judged on its own merits, the reverse would warrant a Gem designation. The strike is well executed in all areas and pale green-gold highlights are detected at select angles. Certainly one of the highlights in this extensive offering of challenging Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles.
From the Virgil Farstad Collection. (#9191) (Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26GM, PCGS# 9191)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
