Description

Conditionally Rare 1930-S Double Eagle MS64

1930-S $20 MS64 PCGS. An exceedingly rare Saint-Gaudens issue that was extensively melted after a production run of just 74,000 pieces. Unlike other 1929-1932 issues, the supply of 1930-S twenties has not increased appreciably over the past few decades, leaving perhaps fewer than 60 coins extant today in all grades. Of the five collectible issues at the end of the Saint-Gaudens series, the '30-S is clearly the most difficult, and in Mint State the '30-S ranks from fourth to sixth, depending on the survey, of the 54 issues in the series. Only the legendary 1927-D is significantly more elusive as an Uncirculated coin. This Choice example, while moderately abraded over both sides, possesses radiant luster and is draped in appealing layers of reddish-orange patina.(#9191) (Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26GM, PCGS# 9191)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
