Description:
Select Uncirculated 1930-S Double Eagle
1930-S MS 63 NGC. While 74,000 pieces were originally struck of the 1930-S twenty, virtually all were melted in the 1930s, leaving only 60 or so coins extant today in all grades. Of the five collectible dates at the end of the Saint-Gaudens series, the '30-S is probably the most difficult, barely nudging out the 1931-D. In mint state, the '30-S ranks 6th of the 54 issues in the series with MS 63 pieces rated a high R.7 by David Akers. This is certainly a premium piece for the grade. Struck in the greenish-gold color often seen, the surfaces show the soft, frosted luster common to this issue. There are very few abrasions on either side, the most notable one being on the right (facing) knee of Liberty. (NGC ID# 26GM, PCGS# 9191)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
