Description:
Elite Gem 1931 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle
1931 $20 MS65 NGC. With respect to all 54 issues in the Saint-Gaudens series of double eagles, David Akers (1988) ranks the 1931-P seventh, in Mint State. He assigns a High R.7 ("Very Rare") rating to this issue in Uncirculated grades. And current population statistics bear this out. PCGS and NGC combined have certified more than 100 1931-dated Philadelphia double eagles in Mint State. The median Uncirculated grade is MS64, with more than 50 pieces believed extant. Thirty MS65s have been certified, and more than 10 Premium Gems have been graded, but only one MS67.
The presently offered Gem can only be described as beautiful, and it seems likely that even a non-numismatist would find its appearance to be compellingly attractive. Frosty luster radiates warmly and evenly from the two sides, highlighting clearly defined design features and smooth surfaces that display an artfully variegated color scheme. Light orange-gold toning mingles with mint-green, pink, and peach coloration. The few scattered blemishes, a dark spot to the right of Liberty's head, and a small alloy spot on the upper right reverse, are collectively insufficient to call the Gem grade assessment into question, and have a minimal influence on the exquisite overall appearance of the piece.
As scarce as this late date issue is, and seems likely to remain, this visually pleasing high grade specimen is certain to attract considerable attention from serious specialists, and also seems rightfully deserving of a premium bid. NGC Census: 9 in 65, 4 finer (11/05).
