Description

Sought-After 1931-D Double Eagle MS63

1931-D $20 MS63 PCGS. Satiny with appealing lilac and pale orange accents along with a touch of olive at the borders. The surfaces are generally smooth and would handily qualify as Choice were it not for a prominent abrasion on and to the left of Liberty's torch. A few smaller, trailing marks are also seen in the left obverse field. The rarity of this final Denver Mint Double Eagle should be readily evident to all collectors since Akers referred to a group of fifteen to twenty examples that surfaced in the mid-1980s as a "hoard." While these coins were sufficient to knock the 1931-D out of the same rarity class as the vaunted 1930-S, most of them grade no higher than the present example. Multiple offerings of elusive Saint-Gaudens issues seem to be more the rule than the exception in this year's FUN Sale, and so it is with the 1931-D. (#9193) (Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 26GP, PCGS# 9193)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
