Description:
Undeniably Rare 1931-D Twenty Dollar, MS64 NGC
1931-D $20 MS64 NGC. Both sides exhibit sharp striking definition, as is often seen on examples of this D-mint issue. The luster is full and frosty, and the surfaces are originally preserved with dominant orange-gold overtones. Isolated swirls of golden-rose color are also seen through the centers, but singularly distracting abrasions are virtually nonexistent. In fact, most of those bagmarks that are present are well concealed within the eagle's feathers. It is always an important opportunity for our bidders when we offer a 1931-D Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. We last sold an MS64 NGC representative as lot 8276 in our August 2001 Atlanta ANA Signature Sale. That coin realized $20,125.
The Denver Mint produced just 106,500 Double Eagles in 1931, most of which were not released into circulation. Rather, the majority of examples were retained in federal vaults and then melted in the aftermath of President Roosevelt's Gold Recall Act of April 5, 1933. Gold specialists once considered the 1931-D to be equally as rare as the 1930-S. A small hoard of 15-20 coins, however, surfaced in the Midwest in 1984, and this issue is now similar in rarity to the 1931 and 1932. Since most hoard coins grade no finer than MS63, the '31-D is still a condition rarity on par with the '30-S. (NGC ID# 26GP, PCGS# 9193)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
