Description:
1931-D Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Rarity
1931-D $20 MS 61 PCGS. Similar to the 1930-S, the 1931-D is the fourth rarest date in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series after only the 1907 Extremely High Relief, 1927-D, and 1933. While there are fewer extant 1931-D double eagles than 1921s, this P-mint issue is definitely the rarer of the two in high grades. Although a few individual pieces came out of hiding in Europe in the 1960s, no hoards of 1931-D twenties have ever surfaced and scholars estimate that no more than 45 examples survive today. As befits the issue, this coin shows pinpoint striking definition and rich, orange-champagne coloration. A few surface disruptions in the left obverse field seem to account for the low Mint State grade, but the balance of the features are smooth. The satiny luster provides for overall eye appeal that is superior to the MS 61 grade. In sum, this is a coin that deserves careful consideration among advanced gold collectors. (NGC ID# 26GP, PCGS# 9193)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse and Duckor Collections
Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
