Description

Gem 1837 No Stars, Large Date Dime
Flashy Coin in Original NGC Black Holder

1837 10C No Stars, Large Date MS65 NGC. NGC 1.0 Original Black Holder. Gold CAC. This example is certified in a first-generation NGC black holder dating back to 1987, not the modern "retro look" slabs, and as such this piece should stir up enormous interest. The original NGC black slabs are quite rare, and this is the first the present cataloger recalls seeing in a Heritage auction (but there have almost certainly been others, given that we have several full-time U.S. coin catalogers). The gold CAC label will also add interest -- and the coin itself carries an impressive resume on its own, mounted reverse-side-up in the NGC holder. The strike is razor-sharp throughout. The reverse offers an untoned silver center bounded by deep sunset-orange, amber, and dusky purple hues with cobalt-blue accents. Even though a loupe reveals a couple of tiny marks, the grade is certainly finer than Gem. Brilliant luster prevails, even in the areas of deepest toning. The obverse (one of our favorite U.S. coin designs) features a similar color palette, even if the surfaces are a tad less flashy than the reverse. Watch this one soar at auction. Census: 24 in 65, 31 finer (3/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 237R, PCGS# 4561)
