Description

1863 10C MS63 PCGS. Fortin-101a. A scarce date in any grade with a mintage of only 14,000 business strikes. PCGS has graded only 9 pieces in MS63 (as of 3/05), and 14 pieces higher. This example exhibits semi-prooflike fields, which is typical of high-grade business strikes. The design elements are exquisitely struck, with only the lower wheat kernels on the upper left (facing) wreath showing traces of softness. The fields are bathed in variegated cobalt-blue and lavender-magenta toning, which further accentuates the lighter motifs. The surfaces are well preserved, with just one trivial mark in the lower left (facing) obverse field, and a couple of more on the O of ONE.
