Tied For Finest Certified MS66 1863 dime1863 10C MS66 NGC. Only 14,000 business strikes were made of the 1863 dime, which is relatively rare in all grades. PCGS and NGC combined have certified fewer than 75 examples, only about a dozen of which grade MS66 and above. NGC has assigned the Star designation to just two Premium Gems, and no higher-graded pieces. The untoned surfaces of the specimen offered here displays partially prooflike fields, as is typical for high-grade specimens of this issue. A sharp strike is noted on the design elements, except for weakness in some of the kernels of the upper left (facing) wreath and on the bowknot. A few minor, unobtrusive ticks on Liberty's cheek and in the left (facing) obverse field are mentioned for accuracy.(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 239K, PCGS# 4637)
