1840 $1 AU53 PCGS Secure. The Philadelphia Mint produced a reported total of 61,005 silver dollars in 1840, the first year of the Seated Liberty design. Although it was the first of its type, coins from the 1840 issue were not saved in appreciable numbers, leaving few high grade survivors. Small splashes of gold, orange, and brown colors appear at outer portions of the obverse. This lightly circulated example retains a pleasing level of design detail. The reverse is particularly attractive. Population: 23 in 53, 79 finer (8/13).(Registry values: N991) (NGC ID# 24YA, PCGS# 6926)
