Mint State 1844 Seated Liberty Dollar1844 $1 MS63 NGC. Rich orange-gold, ruby, lilac, and electric-blue colors envelop this nicely struck better date Seated Dollar. A few moderate marks on the fields are apparent only when examined beneath a loupe. A scant 20,000 pieces were struck, and although many of the survivors are in AU grades, just a handful are known in Select Mint State. Diagnostic for 1844 business strikes is the doubled obverse, which has four lines within each vertical stripe. Bold die polish lines border the eagle's wings near the shield, which Breen (under his reference number 5431) calls the 'armpit' variety. Only one finer Mint State example of this scarce date has been certified by NGC. Population: 4 in 63, 1 finer (10/05).(#6930) (Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 24YE, PCGS# 6930)
