Scarce 1850 Seated Dollar, AU55 PCGS1850 $1 AU55 PCGS. The large amounts of gold that were arriving in the mints and assay offices from the West undoubtedly accounted for the popularity and promotion of the gold dollar. By the same token, the price of silver was on the decline. While never a particularly popular or highly produced coin, only 7,500 silver dollars were struck in 1850. Probably no more than 200 pieces are extant today in all grades. At the AU and Mint State level, probably fewer than 100 individual pieces are known. This is a well-detailed AU that retains the flashy semi-prooflike finish so often seen in the fields of Seated dollars. Mostly brilliant, there is just a bit of light, smoky brown patina present on each side. Minimally abraded.(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 24YM, PCGS# 6937)
