Select Original 1851 Seated Dollar1851 $1 MS63 NGC. The 1851 is a famous rarity within the Seated Liberty series. It is more rare than the 1852, whose mintage of 1,100 pieces is slightly less than the 1851, for which 1,300 coins were struck. The latter production does not count Restrike proofs, which are readily distinguished by the lower placement of the date. Although Original 1851 Dollars have been cataloged as proofs in the past, these are now believed to have been prooflike business strikes. Given the extremely small production, it is not surprising that there are prooflike pieces among the handful of Mint State survivors. Bowers (1993) surmises these prooflike pieces may also have been the outcome of die polishing to remove clash marks. The present piece exhibits a prominent mint-made clash mark beneath the raised arm, yet the unbroken mint luster is mildly mirrored throughout the fields, and even provides slight contrast with the frosty devices. Lightly toned, hints of gold and sea-green color adorn the rims, and wisps of pale rose toning grace the shield and right (facing) wingtip. A small mark beneath the knee and a tiny diagonal tick beneath the first S in STATES are mentioned solely for pedigree purposes. This sharply struck and well pedigreed example deserves placement in the finest specialized set of Seated Dollars. It resides in the same NGC holder from its appearance in the 1993 Worrell auction. In its earlier appearance in the Auction '87 catalog, it was described as "the finest example of this extremely rare date that we have seen or heard of."
