Description

1857 Silver Dollar, MS64
Most Exported or Melted

1857 $1 MS64 NGC. The combination of a low mintage and a high silver content that exceeded face value helps to explain the rarity of the 1857 Seated dollar. In 1857, the value of silver in each silver dollar was approximately $1.05, explaining why they were exported and/or melted as bullion.

This Choice Mint State 1857 Seated silver dollar is weakly defined at the peripheries, including the stars, Liberty's head, and her foot. The reverse is especially weak at the top of the left (facing) wing, and those poorly defined elements are typical of most or all known examples of this issue. Both sides have satiny silver luster beneath gold and iridescent toning over both sides. Some natural planchet striations are evident on the obverse that remain from before this piece was struck. Census: 14 in 64, 2 finer (3/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 24YW, PCGS# 6945)
