Business Strike 1859 Seated Dollar Rarity, MS64 PCGS1859 $1 MS64 PCGS. By studying mintage figures alone, it would seem that the 1859 (256,500 pieces produced) is one of the more plentiful issues in the No Motto Seated Dollar series of 1840-1865. What the mintage figures do not reveal is that most business strikes of this date were exported to the Orient. The exact fate of these coins is not known with certainty, but there is no doubt that they were lost to future generations of collectors. A rare MS64 PCGS example (only five survivors have been certified as such, with a lone MS65 PCGS coin finer, 1/03), both sides are sharply struck with bright, striated (as produced) fields. Untoned save for a few sprays of tan iridescence here and there, the surfaces reveal only one noteworthy abrasion: a reeding mark in the obverse field before star 1. There is also an identifying planchet void (as struck) in the field at Liberty's left (facing) shoulder. (NGC ID# 24YX, PCGS# 6946)
