Description:
Enigmatic 1859-S Dollar
1859-S $1 AU50 PCGS. The 1859-S is a curious issue and one where the entire story is not known. Only 20,000 pieces were struck, and according to Bowers (1993), the entire mintage was exported to the Orient. As one would expect, it is predictably rare in all grades, but it is oddly more available than the mintage would indicate. One can only speculate on the reasons for this, but some did return to the United States. Nevertheless, most of the survivors are in the VF-XF grade range. The present AU example reveals hints of pale gray-gold toning, and has nice remaining luster in the recessed areas. The design elements are boldly impressed throughout, and the surfaces display just a few relatively unimportant abrasions, particularly on the obverse. Wispy slidemarks in the fields are not particularly bothersome. Population: 17 in 50, 55 finer (3/04).(#6948) (Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 24YZ, PCGS# 6948)
