Description

Important Select 1859-S Dollar

1859-S $1 MS63 PCGS. The first Silver Dollar issue from the San Francisco Mint, the 1859-S carries a premium in all grades, since only 20,000 pieces were struck. Most survivors are clustered in VF to AU grades, but a small number of Mint State pieces are known. PCGS has certified 16 pieces in Mint State, none above the MS63 level. The present example has light tan color throughout the centers, with medium sea-green toning along the obverse margin. Shimmering luster dominates the devices and borders. The fields have a few small strike-thrus, as made, but the only mentionable mark is on Liberty's chest. An opportunity for the Seated specialist, since another piece of similar quality might not emerge for several years.
