Elusive Choice XF 1859-S Silver Dollar1859-S $1 XF45 PCGS. Gunmetal-blue and golden-brown encompasses this well defined and moderately abraded example. In its first 15 years of operation, the San Francisco Mint struck silver dollars only in 1859. Half dollars were the preferred denomination for silver depositors, presumably because they contained less silver per face value. Only 20,000 pieces were struck, and many were exported to the Orient.(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 24YZ, PCGS# 6948)
