Description:
Lovely Near-Gem 1866 Motto Seated Dollar
1866 $1 MS64 NGC. As the first year of the "with Motto" type, the 1866 has long been prized by type collectors and Seated Dollar specialists alike. The Mint produced only 48,900 business strikes this year, none of which circulated at the time of issue. The trend begun during the Civil War continued, with most coins leaving the country bound for destruction abroad. Those coins that survived did so either by chance, or were fortunate enough to remain within the United States until such time that they were able to circulate at face value.
This is one of the finest 1866 Seated Dollars that we have offered, and the first MS64 representative consigned to one of our auctions in four years. The luster is predominantly frosty in texture; the fields, while moderately bright, are free of noticeable striations. Every feature is fully defined, and the virtually untoned surfaces do not reveal any noteworthy blemishes. Population: 9 in 64, with a mere four finer (1/02). (NGC ID# 24Z9, PCGS# 6959)
